Sukezo Sukegawa was once a well-known comic strip writer, has a wife and a son, but he fell behind the times and failed. He builds a hut besides the Tama River and undertaken to sell assorted stones and rocks he picked up from the river. Unfortunately, no one seems all that interested in his wares. Along the way, he meets a fellow rock dealer who is very weird, and his wife, who is even weird. The former tells him of an auction where he might just sell something while the latter tries to seduce him. Later he meets an enigmatic bird salesman, who tell him about another way to earn money. Meanwhile, his long-suffering wife struggles between loving her husband and hating his insane pursuit.
