Set in 1920s China, the original series stars Chow Yun Fat as patriotic university student Hui Man Keung, who arrives in Shanghai with little money and no place to stay. Keung meets Ding Lik (Ray Lui), an honorable man of humble background, and the two become bosom buddies.
