A lazy afternoon alongside the Han is shattered when a large, unidentified mass hanging from a bridge reveals itself to be a slimy, slobbering monstrosity that gobbles up stunned spectators in a lumbering rampage, turning the riverbank into a gruesome scene of carnage. With a flick of its tail, the beast snatches away the daughter of a dimwitted snack vendor, retreating into the water before the eyes of her horrified family. Collaborating with three different visual-effects specialists - Weta Workshop (the Lord of the Rings series), John Cox's Creature Workshop (Babe) and The Orphanage (Hellboy) - Bong has crafted an outstanding beastie, but the star of the show isn't the monster so much as the dysfunctional family pitted against this biological mutation. Song Kang-ho (JSA, The Foul King and Memories of Murder) plays Gang-du, the vendor hell-bent on rescuing his daughter after a cell-phone call proves she's still alive. The government is paralyzed by American forces fearful of an infectious virus spread by the monster, so Gang-du and his family (including an alcoholic son and an Olympic bronze-medalist daughter) rise up to wage an intense, low-tech battle against the monster.
